November 14, 2023The Blink Outdoor 4 Floodlight Camera system is totally wireless and solves the problem of needing to hardwire components or be located near an electrical outlet. I initially wanted to install this on the front of my garage but my brick exterior put the task above my grade-level. I went online to the Blink website to review installation instructions and decided to install under the eave over my back deck where I had a pre-existing motion sensor floodlight but no camera. I currently use Blink cameras and the Blink Home Monitor App with a subscription to the Plus Plan to monitor them, so this addition to my system was very simple.
This setup includes the mounting hardware, the mount with 2-700 lumen LED lights, the Blink Outdoor 4 add-on camera, the sync module 2 local video storage hub with USB cable and power adapter, and 4 size-D alkaline and 2-AA lithium batteries (not rechargeable but advertised to provide up to two years of battery life dependent on use). The sync module also requires a USB flash drive that is not included to store video if you do not purchase a Blink monitoring subscription (available through Amazon). I didn’t install the included sync module since I already had one in use.
The mounting plate fit perfectly in the predrilled location of my previous floodlight and I used the screws that I removed instead of the ones that were included. I then checked to see how easily the mount attached-it slid and clicked in place with no issues. The floodlight seemed a bit heavy and it’s because the 4-D batteries come preinstalled. It slides off and on the mounting plate when you depress a very flimsy plastic tab. I really think given the weight of the floodlights-even before I attached the camera that it may not stand up to harsh weather conditions or even the passage of time. Even though this entire system is made of plastic the mounting plate could stand to be more reinforced. Also included is a shiny metallic-like vinyl siding hook for no-drill installation on a house with siding. I did not use this but it seemed a bit insubstantial as well. The back cover twists off allowing you access to the battery compartment and you push down the tabs to expose the batteries and then you can remove the plastic tab preventing the batteries from operating.
Heads up-you have to add the camera to your Blink account before attaching it to the floodlight and mounting it or you will be taking it apart later to do so. With the Blink Home Monitor App installed I just had to tap the + symbol in the top right corner, select the device I was adding (which was the Outdoor 4 Floodlight Camera), and the app prompted me on how to set up the floodlight portion of the system. It then asked if the Blink Outdoor 4 camera included was already added to my account. It was not, so I clicked to add the camera. It prompted me to scan the QR code inside the battery compartment of the camera and then proceeded to walk me through the setup. The USB cover of the camera has to be off to allow you to connect it to the cord on the floodlight (save it because you need to replace it to keep the camera weather-resistant if you choose to use the camera separately at a later date). When you connect them, the floodlight automatically connects to the Blink App and all that is left is to snap the camera onto the swivel neck on the mount.
I love that the lights move independently and can be pointed in different directions allowing you to illuminate whatever you need to. The camera also swivels so you can aim it more precisely. The 700 lumen LEDs are not as bright as the floodlight that I removed but after a bit of adjustment they also do not illuminate my neighbor’s windows when they are triggered (either manually via the app or by the motion-detection system). The video is extremely clear in the daytime and clear at night and the live feed loads quickly on the app. The two-way audio is clear despite occasional background static that I hear but cannot pinpoint the source of. The app is very user friendly and allows you to personalize the camera and lighting settings as well as the notifications that you receive. The system is affordable and a great option for installing where no external power source is available and eliminates the need to conceal unsightly cables. Blink offers many different components (cameras-both full-size and mini/indoor and outdoor, doorbell cameras, and floodlights) that can be easily added to your system. I would definitely recommend this floodlight system and the Blink line of devices for anyone looking for an affordable, easy to install and use home security set-up.
[Rewarded Review] Easy Setup/Integration with Blink/Alexa Ecosystems

November 12, 2023As I was already established in both the Amazon/Echo/Alexa and Blink ecosystems, adding this floodlight and camera system was a breeze. I have the Blink doorbell and four of the minis (indoor plug-in camers), as well as a yearly Blink subscription plan already in place. I have Echo Shows in our house and the Blink and Amazon Alexa apps on my iPhones and iPads. If you are in the same boat, where you're just adding another Blink product, setting up this system will be super easy and fast.
Putting together the product itself was also quick and easy--the batteries are included and the directions are short, to the point and not difficult to follow at all; there are also no special tools needed or anything like that. I had no problems with pairing it and adding it to my Blink system via the app; I had it up and running to test it out within minutes.
The motion detection is good, which is what I expected because I've experienced good motion detection in the past with my other Blink products. The floodlights are very bright when activated (either from detecting motion, or you can also manually turn them on yourself via the Blink app), and I like that you can adjust the angles of the lights individually into almost infinite positions, and you can also adjust the camera angles as well. And the resulting videos are very clear and crisp. As per my Blink doorbell which is also run on batteries, there is no continuous/long-term live feed--so when you want to check on anything going on and you turn on the live feed, it will only last about ten seconds before it will prompt you to click on a "Continue?" button, and if you don't click it the live feed will automatically stop about five seconds after that (you just have to keep on hitting that "continue?" prompt over and over if you want to see the live video feed any longer). I've found that only with my wired Blink cameras can I watch a continous live feed for more substantial periods of time (such as when I check on our pets at home during the day when they're alone). There's nothing in the settings to change the battery-operated Blink cameras to continuously show a live feed for longer.
All in all, you can't beat the price of Blink products across the board, including this one, for the value they provide. This Floodlight/Camera combo works very well and integrates seamlessly with other Blink security products and Alexa-enabled devices.
[Rewarded Review] A great improvement over my current cameras!

November 17, 2023The Blink Outdoor Battery Powered 1080p Security Camera is a wire free camera with floodlights. Setup required that the camera be charged before connection to the floodlight base which contains 4 D cell batteries. Blink claims that the unit gets up to 2 years battery life with the included batteries. The other battery powered security cameras (2 brands) I use require that I get out a ladder, unmount them, recharge them, climb the ladder to remount them about every 2 months depending on the activity. Any amount significantly longer than my current cameras would be great, but two years would seem miraculous. There is a slide in mount on the base of the floodlight/battery unit. Mounting screws and anchors are included. There is also a drill free mounting plate that works with siding products. While setup was not difficult, I didn't find a clear instruction that stated that the camera snaps into the floodlight base. I kept looking for an adapter and trying to screw it in. I was also a bit confused connecting the camera to the included sync unit. The sync unit connects to your network and then to the camera. To me it seemed that the instructions wanted to connect to my home network again while it really wanted to connect to the camera. After my minor setup confusion, I found that the camera performs great as does the app. The camera covers my entire front courtyard and detects motion much faster than my current camera or my past camera. My current and past cameras usually do not activate until someone has entered the courtyard, placed the package near the door and is almost out the gate. My current camera often only records a video of the backside of a person exiting the gate. I love the "person" setting that only records when a person is detected. One of my current cameras has this feature but it rarely records anything when on this setting even when I know people have been present. While I do miss the recordings of the birds and animals that visit, I do not miss the recordings of plants swaying in the breeze that my current cameras get. The "person" detection in this Blink camera works as it should! The Blink camera captures almost the entire visit. This camera records at 1080p, half the stated resolution of my current camera yet has a clearer image in daylight, night vision and with the spotlights on. The camera has wider field of view than my current camera. Another great thing about this camera is that the notifications are almost instantaneous, and I am able to view the new recording very quickly. My current camera often takes a couple of minutes to allow me to see the new recording. The included sync unit connects up to 10 cameras to the system and has a USB port that allows local storage of the recordings to a user supplied thumb drive. There is a trial of their cloud storage program included. There is a live view option for those times that you just feel the need to have a look. While this camera is pretty new to me, it is a great improvement over my current camera systems. The imaging is better, the notifications are faster, it is quicker to allow viewing and hopefully the battery life is somewhere near what is advertised. I haven't yet tried out the cameras functions with Alexa or the audio functions but those two things should only make a great camera better.
[Rewarded Review] Easy Install, High Quality and Great App

November 9, 2023This is a very high quality security camera and floodlight system. If you have an existing Blink security system, you merely add this light and camera to that system via your Sync Module. If this is your initial Blink install, you would need to get a Blink Sync Module that supports this security camera/floodlight system and connects to your WiFi access point. The Sync module also allows you to add additional cameras and other devices into a connected system and provides local storage if you wish via a USB port.
I was impressed that Blink has built the intelligence into their products so that installation is sort of magical. Once you have the Blink cell phone app installed, you will then setup your Sync Module, which is connected to an outlet for continuous power and then connects to your WiFi access point. I have had similar hub-like items and it is best to put it in a centralized location relative to your security lights and cameras. The app finds the module and walks you through the easy setup.
This particular light and camera combination is totally battery powered. Batteries were included and the specifications indicate the batteries will last up to 2 years. I attached the camera to the system next and it was easy, just hit ‘add device’ in the app and it finds and installs the camera. You do need to attach the camera to the light physically and via a cable. The app provided details on how to connect the camera physically to the light and also attaching a short cable that integrates the light with the camera. Since they are battery powered you can install them any where you like without the need for External power or power cables.
I found the operation of the camera and light to be very comprehensive. The app provided a better range of controls than my other similar systems. One feature I found important that my prior system didn’t have was the ability to reduce the intensity of the LED lights. Another feature for the camera was to adjust the IR intensity for night viewing; these are not variables you find in many other security systems. When you set the motion parameters for the lights, be aware that you need to set the system to enable for the motion to turn the lights on. I liked the ability to set the duration of the lights-on cycle; and also the people recognition ability of the camera. The images on the cell phone were crystal clear. Outdoor camera temperature range is -4° to 113°. Therefore, I would not suggest mounting the camera in direct sunlight. I did check that if power is disrupted to the Sync Module and then restored, the system will automatically reconnect to WiFi and all devices come back on line without intervention.
There are some subscription plans available for online storage, however you can elect for local storage at no cost. You can also use this system with Alexa. I plan to add additional cameras to the system and another light in the back of the house. I am very pleased with the ease of install and the high quality. I do highly recommend this Blink Security system.
