I teach 5 and 6 level students at my Catholic school. To my 6 graders, I mentioned the premise of the book and their eyes just lit up- they were so intrigued by the idea the author had and then lived for a year. I then took time to go through the book and marked pages I found to apply to our current lessons (they're learning Old Testament, so it was very applicable). I have many students who are non-religious- which puts a Religion teacher in a hard spot. But when I read selected passages from his book to them, it created a real life connection that was effective for all students. The book starts as adversary, which non-religious students can relate to, and with humor. But the humor drew them in to the bigger picture, and understanding became deeper as the stories continued. I don't care to teach to necessarily "convert" anyone. But this book was a supplement to my lessons to help kids understand their energy and curiosity put into effect can bring them higher answers.
Understanding the Jewish Faith

i have been a practising Christian for very many years and am a member of the Methodist Church. this book gave me a much better insight to the practices of people who follow the Jewish faith and the relevance (or otherwise!) of the teachings of the Old Testament in the 21st Century. This should be a set book for all people training to be Methodist Local Preachers and other Churches Members who take on the responsibility of leadership in Churches

This is one of the most profound books I have read. Through the careful deployment of humour Jacobs is able to drive home points that are sorely needed in today's harried and secular society. I currently do not own a copy of this book as I have given away every copy I have bought. In addition, I have recommended this book to many friends and colleagues. The light and chatty style of the book makes for easy reading. The comical, often absurd, antics of Jacobs throughout his year compel you to keep reading, wondering what bizarre situation he will find himself in next. It is the little reflections that Jacobs drops in that make the book so significant. I have often paused while reading to reflect on the true power of what he has just "discovered" through his experiment.
Warning! Don't read this before going to bed!

You will laugh yourself awake. Funny but compelling and helps you learn obscure Old Testament facts. I've told so many people about this book I heartily recommend it!
