In light of the kidnapping plot against the Governor of Michigan and the polarizing political climate, KOMO News asked what's being done to protect the governor of Washington and voters.

Gov. Jay Inslee’s office said they get threats on a regular basis and the Washington State Patrol takes them very seriously.

Governor Inslee responded to the stunning and elaborate plot to kidnap Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“This is very disturbing to me,” Inslee said. “I know Governor Whitmer personally, I know she has shown great courage throughout these tumultuous times.”

Agents foiled the alleged scheme, charging 13 people—some tied to an extremist militia group.

Whitmer addressed the political tensions roiling our country.

“This cannot stand, and we have to call it what it is: it is domestic terrorism,” said Whitmer.

Gov. Inslee’s office said right now there aren’t any known threats against him.

“There will be appropriate security provided for your governor I’m sure,” Inslee said.

Washington State Patrol said they vigorously protect the governor, saying in a statement, “The Washington State Patrol is charged with the safety and protection of the Governor and his or her family as well as the safe operations of the Capitol Campus. We are aware of the recent developments regarding the Michigan Governor and applaud the work of state and federal law enforcement to protect her and to apprehend and prosecute those intent on harm.

The citizens of Washington can be assured that WSP maintains a vigorous approach to executive protection. Threats against public officials are unfortunately a common occurrence in these unprecedented times but each and every one is investigated thoroughly and when criminal intent or activity is found, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. A threat to a governor or other public official is a threat against all of us as our elected leaders represent the diversity in experience and opinion that make our democracy sound while supporting a safe and free public.”

Heading to the election, around the country, the FBI said agents are bracing for unrest as fears grow over the potential for violent clashes.

Veteran Law enforcement expert Jim Fuda, who is the Director of Law Enforcement Services for Crimestoppers of Puget Sound, said agencies are running through different scenarios of what could play out.

“Knowing their ideology—is there anymore chatter coming up?" Fuda said. "Are they training more extensively? These are the kind of things that are being looked at. The goal is plan for a worst case and hope for a best-case scenario.”

The Seattle FBI Office told KOMO News they are working with federal and state partners to make sure that all Washingtonions’ rights are protected throughout the election season.
