South Korean actress Choi Ji-woo was married in a “quiet” private ceremony.

Choi, 42, surprised her fans after posting a handwritten note on her fan club website announcing her wedding on March 29.

“Today, March 29, is the day I promised to begin a new start with my life partner,” she wrote. “We held a quiet ceremony this afternoon, with only our family members present,” she wrote.

“My heart was heavy while planning the wedding as I was not able to share this news. I should have shared this earlier… but ask for your understanding as I had to be cautious to spare family members and my husband-to-be, who is not a public figure, the potential burden [of a public wedding].”

The reason for the secrecy behind her wedding, the actress explained in her note, was because her husband was not a public figure and she wanted to protect his privacy.

The small wedding took place in a hotel in Seoul, and was attended by her and her husband’s family members.

The A-list actress is best known for her roles in the 2002 South Korea television drama Winter Sonata, which co-starred Bae Yong-joon, and another television series, Stairway to Heaven (2003-2004), which were hits not only in South Korea, but across Asia.

Her popularity abroad, especially in Japan after the airing of Winter Sonata, earned her the nickname “Jiwoo-hime”, which means Princess Ji-woo in Japanese.

Soon after the wedding, YG Entertainment released photos of Choi in her wedding dress, which was designed by Lebanese designer Mohammed Ashi, founder of design house Ashi Studio.

Ashi is already a well-known presence amongst the fashionable A-list crowd, having dressed American rapper Cardi B for the Grammy awards and German former-model-turned-television-personality Heidi Klum for the Golden Globes, both held early this year.
