NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A new baby bird at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is far from your average city pigeon, and it’s only just over two weeks old.

The zoo announced Monday on Twitter that the Victoria crowned pigeon baby is now on display at the zoo’s Asia aviary. It just hatched on March 28.

The blue, mostly ground dwelling pigeons native to New Guinea grow to about the size of a turkey, and only fly up to tree branches for protection or food, according to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh

The zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

And while you’re in Norfolk, you also can check out the “Albesila” luminarium at the MacArthur Center. The massive, inflatable maze of light and art is open through April 21.
