(The photo below shows what the baby bird looked like in February) Officials said they are one of the largest species of pigeons in the world, with this chick being the first one hatched in Milwaukee County. At 5 weeks of age, the chick weighed about 8.5 ounces. Now, at 2 months old, it weighs just over 2 pounds. In addition to supplemental tube feeding, zookeepers are currently teaching the chick to eat on its own and offering it fruit and pellets."So they can get up to about 5 to 6 pounds at their max, and like I said, the largest pigeon out there, and very pretty. So they got the very pretty crown, the very pretty feathers, which is actually a problem for them in the wild cause they are hunted for those feathers and for meats so being pretty doesn't always help them out," said Amanda Ista of the Milwaukee County Zoo. Zoo staff said they have been caring for the bird for about two months and helped it hatch. In the wild, Victoria crowned pigeons are native to New Guinea and are the largest birds in the dove/pigeon family.
