With its innovative three-door configuration making waves from the day it first appeared in the marketplace in 2012, Hyundai's little hot hatch has become even hotter. Say hello to the 2019 Hyundai Veloster.

The three doors that made it famous when it was introduced in 2012 remain. It's still one of its quirkiest charms. Hyundai flew us to Austin, Texas, one of the quirkiest cities in America, to test drive the new Veloster. It was the perfect location to test the car, considering the city motto is "Keep Austin Weird." It's perfect.

A "reverse halo car," the Veloster bucks the trend of a typical halo model by being priced at the lower end of the pricing spectrum. But just because it is priced that way doesn't mean it lacks any of the features that we have come to know and expect in a new model vehicle.
Designed to appeal to younger, less affluent buyers, as a bridge vehicle to the Hyundai and Genesislineup, it has been sent to finishing school where it received a taut new body, new suspension and interiors. But wait! There's more!

With all these changes, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster clearly fits into the popular hot hatch segment of Sport Compact cars that are known for being Fast, Small and Fun.

The 2019 Veloster hits the playground with a pair of powertrain choices that will appeal to all comers. Base power is provided by Hyundai's gas-sipping Nu 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, up 15-horsepower and 12 lb-ft more than the 2017 model. (Hyundai did not produce a 2018 model). This base powertrain
mates to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

Next up is the exciting Gamma 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Used in other vehicles within the Hyundai lineup, this engine can be had with a buyer's choice of SHIFTRONIC seven-speed dual clutch transmission that allows you to shift with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers, or as an R-Spec version with a six-speed manual transmission and super slick B&M (of drag racing fame) stick shift. It's a lot of fun and will allow you to channel your inner road racer alter ego.

A couple of cool features: There is an over-boost function that kicks up the twist in the 1.6-liter Turbo from 195 to 202 lb-ft of torque. Torque Vectoring is now standard throughout the line to assist with dynamic handling, by interfacing the electronic stability controls (ESC) with sensors that help slow down the inside wheel of any turn.

On the backside, the previously used torsion beam rear axle has been retired in favor of a contemporary multi-link rear suspension. That, and other revised, and lightened suspension bits have made for a much more agile specimen.

Outside looking in.

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster has the appeal of a two + one door hot hatch coupe, with the added utility of a third door that lets rear seat occupants enter and exit without having to wait to be released from rear seat jail. In fact, the rear seat is not a jail at all and during our test drives with it, observed six-foot rear passengers settling in, although the rear seat is not the optimal spot to enjoy a six-hour cross-country tour.

The front of the new 2019 Veloster features a new, bolder grille and available LED headlights along with standard LED daylight running lights that flank the new grille's design. Functional air curtains lend an aggressive appearance and also serve the purpose of making the Veloster's front end more aerodynamic by causing a deliberate airflow over the front wheels, which incidentally can be ordered on optional 18-inch alloy wheels. A happy by-product of the air curtains are that they partially eliminates some of the interior road noise.

More muscular, with an enhanced swept-back appearance, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster takes on a much more aggressive appearance that speaks to the performance-minded enthusiast. New wheel wells with "higher volume fenders" allow for a more planted look that leads nicely to the rear-mounted diffuser under the rear hatch. With the 2.0-liter engine, the diffuser features a single central exhaust finisher. Order the Veloster Turbo or Turbo/R-Spec version and you'll get a pair of them.

Inside looking out.

Driver-centric is how we describe the interior of the 2019 Hyundai Veloster. In fact, that's by design. The driver's side of the cabin, --just the driver's seating area, features a "dark-contrasted" cockpit that separates itself from the two-tone passenger and rear seating area. Available in several trim levels, it features a variety of colors, fabrics and materials that vary according to the exterior hues. Speaking of rear seating, there's 19.9-cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row, which features a 60:40 split for expanded space.

The Veloster includes an Infinity premium satellite and HD-compatible audio system with standard seven-inch display, or a floating eight-inch display which includes navigation. Displaying stellar audio qualities, the system is compatible with many popular commercially available apps.

The Veloster Turbo models receive amplified audio into the cabin that enhances the sound of the turbocharged four-cylinder. They can be dialed up or turned off, as well. It's your prerogative.

Behind the wheel.

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster is a car now on its best behavior. In our testing of the Turbo and Turbo R-Spec Veloster models, we had a ton of fun punching through the Metro Austin traffic, corner cutting and banging through the gears. Engaging is just an understatement. This is a car that wants to show its handling attitude. The Veloster was an agile performer. It is now even more so, thanks to the multi-link rear suspension.

Like the little engine that could, the Veloster's 1.6 liter turbo managed to kick us back in the seat at a fairly regular rate. That, coupled with the Active Engine Sounds provide quite some music of its own in Austin, The Live Music Capital of the world.

Number one with a bullet (Music reference!) the 2019 Hyundai Veloster is probably the most fun you can have with three doors. In other words, it's a hit.
