Description
The Great Orange Tip is the largest of the lepidopteran family Pieridae found in Asia. Aptly named , it bears bright white wings on the upper side, with a bright orange area at the apex of the forewings . In stark contrast to the bright showy upper surfaces, the underside mimic the appearance of a dried leaf, when at rest with wings folded upright it comouflages the butterfly well from predators. The species used to be common through out the whole of Peninsula Malaya down to Singapore. In recents years the lost of habitat due to urbanization and the clearing of forested areas for oilpalm cultivation, the distribution of the species has been receeding northwards. Nowadays it is rarely seen in the southern part of the Peninsula Malaya. It became extinct in Singapore a number of years back.
