Endangered

The false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) is an endangered species. It is estimated that there are fewer than 2,500 adult specimens left in their native habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia. The largest population lives in the Danau Sentarum National Park in Indonesia. This park has the largest remaining tracts of swamp forest, an important breeding ground of the false gharial. According to estimates, this population will continue to decline by 25% in the coming years. The most significant threats to the false gharials' survival are loss of habitat due to deforestation and agriculture, hunting and the removal of eggs from their nests.

The project

The project in het Danau Sentarum National Park in Indonesia has two phases. In the first phase, the current population will be determined and the precise threats identified in order to be able to draw up a species conservation action plan. The second phase will involve implementing the action plan, which incorporates the socio-economic aspects of the local population.
