Today’s Music in Time takes you back to when author May Gibbs first published Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie - 100 years ago, in 1918.
The adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie have been a loved and cherished story for kids growing up in Australia for generations now. Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are two little Eucalyptus gumnut babies who long to see a human. Snugglepot is the leader and Cuddlepie is more reserved and gentle. The Banksia Men and their henchmen are the villains of the stories, along with the spiteful Mrs Snake. They go on many heroic adventures through the Australian bush, meeting up with their good friends Mr Lizard and Little Ragged Blossom along the way.
May Gibbs lived from 1877-1969 and she is one of Australia’s most loved children’s authors and illustrators. Her stories captured the imagination of young people by creating a world of Australian bush fairies and creatures. In her later life, she said “I’ve always had the greatest pleasure in thinking of all those little children who enjoyed my books. Everything became alive for me, it was just a fairy tale all the time.”
