Some Favorite Hair Finishing Products!

I’m ashamed to say I’m not one to do much with my hair. I shampoo daily (and I don’t even really remember to condition). I have long, semi-fine hair that is unprocessed, with a very oily scalp so I can’t stand to go a day without a wash.

But when I need a little help aside from shampooing my roots (LUSH SeaWik or Kerastase Bain Divalent) and conditioning the ends lightly, these are the products I turn to!

<Kérastase Fluide Purifiant>

Having an oily scalp means limp, greasy roots, build-up, and even - if I’m not careful - dandruff. Using this salicylic acid infused product on the scalp about twice a week not only keeps my hair feeling light and soft (it never feels greasy or leaves a residue), but is also a great way to head off any potential problems.

Use on damp scalp for best results.

<Fave Leave-in conditioners: Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom and The Body Shop Grapeseed Glossing Serum>

I’ve used Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom for years, and I have to say it’s grooming cream that works better on coarse, wavy, thick hair. I love it for taming frizz and adding shine and softness on chemically processed hair. Nowadays, I just make sure to use just the tiniest amount and rub well between both hands so I can distribute the lightest amount near the ends without weighing down the length.

Usable on both dry and damp hair.

The Body Shop’s Grapeseed Glossing Serum is an alternative that’s better for smoothing fine hair because the formula is made up of a lot of lightweight oils and silicones. It’s similar to L'oreal’s “Extraordinary” leave-in hair oil, but the plus is it it doesn’t have that rather heavy scent. This smells light and fruity. The L'oreal does contain a bigger blend of different natural oils and extracts so if you prefer that and don’t find the scent objectionable, by all means go for that one.

Use on both damp and dry hair. (I also use both on cuticles!)

<Best for Volume - Alternia Texturizing Body Boost and Living Proof Amp²>

There are plenty of hair powders and dry shampoos around (I’ve used a fair number over the years) but I’m REALLY impressed by Alternia’s Bamboo style Texturizing Body Boost “Volumizing Liquid Powder”. A tiny bit sprinkled or brushed around the roots gives instant volume, like you’ve backcombed your hair. The best thing is it doesn’t come off sticky on your hands when touched, and hair doesn’t clump together or look greasy the way some spray-on products can look.

Use only on dry hair.

Unlike volumizing mousses and creams, Living Proof Amp² Instant Texture Volumizer is a unique cream that you can rub into dry hair for texture and volume. If you’re afraid of things looking dusty or getting a clump of powder in spots, this is a great alternative. It’s also usable down the length of the hair and to do a little styling around the fringe, unlike powders which work better around the roots. The brand is not yet released in Singapore but will be available in the next couple of months. I’m working off a tiny sample jar!

Best on dry hair.

<Most portable/handy>

Whether you need volume on the go, or to smooth out frizz and tangles, these are 2 products that are incredibly handy to have around when you need to spruce up your hair before a night out and don’t have time to get your hair washed and done.

Firstly, Shu Uemura has a handy dust-on volume powder in their Art of Hair range, which dispenses powder with a push of a button and then can be dusted and distributed onto hair roots using the brush. No fear of clumps of visible powder!

If your worry is dullness, dryness and frizz, then Percy & Reed’s spray on dry conditioner is genius. Just spray onto a brush and brush onto the hair length for weightless gloss and shine.

It’s such a neat concept I’m not sure why there aren’t more brands that created their own versions of this!
