PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – It’s a new era for Michelle Wie, who for the first time in her professional career has something other than a Nike Swoosh on her bag and clubs. The most recognizable player on the LPGA now plays Callaway clubs.
Wiesy, who was eager to show off her new wedges on the way to the range, said she never so much as hit a friend’s club in the past decade-plus.
“I haven’t even touched anything since I was maybe 15,” said Wie of her Nike loyalty. “That’s a really long time, so obviously I was, you know, really scared.”
With Nike now out of the club-making business, Wie tried out a variety of different clubs. She ultimately chose Callaway and noted that the manufacturer’s team made the transition process smooth.
Wie, who continues to wear Nike apparel, took her clubs to Hawaii over the offseason for the first time in years. She had ended the 2016 season on a high note and wanted to keep it going. Besides, most of her friends work now and she found herself waiting around until 5 p.m. to find something to do.
“I just didn’t want to forget my swing,” said Wie, who traveled to the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic this week without her parents or dog (a extremely rare occurrence).
Wie now carries a Great Big Bertha Epic driver in her bag with 10.5 degrees of loft, a D-3 swing weight, and a 45-inch-long Tour AD TP6X shaft.
She also has an Epic 3-wood, a pair of Big Bertha Alpha hybrids (18 and 23 degrees) and Apex Pro 16 irons with Oban shafts. The four-time tour winner carries three Mack Daddy Forged wedges (52, 56 and 60 degrees) and an Odyssey Works Versa 2-Ball Fang putter.
