HEWLETT SET TO START
Wildcats test young Wolverine defense

Today's season opening football game with Northwestern can answer a lot of
questions, important questions, about the Michigan football program. Important
questions like, 'How many light bulbs in the scoreboard need replacing' or 'Will
the guards be checking section number closely so we can't crash in the wrong
seats and sit with our friends.'
Oh yeah, the game. It serves as a good introductory course for freshmen in
Michigan football: "Beating the crap out of an opponent; 101." Class starts at 1
p.m. and your section numbers are on your tickets.
First time football followers will see (in demonstration form) how a Michigan
offense is supposed to work in its most perfect state, just like the coach draws it
out on paper with the little X's and O's. They should also take note of football
Saturday traditions like the players jumping up to touch the 'M' Club banner, the
'M' men doing back flips for each point (they will have many opportunities to see
that), and the 'Bull Shit' cheer.
Today will be loads of fun for everyone except those associated with North-
western. It seems they can't find the humor in it.
It can't be much fun being a Wildcat fan unless your idea of a good time is
Swaxing the stairs at the old-folks home.
Well, honestly it's not really all that bad. Northwestern, under the direction of
third-year head coach Rick Venturi, has been on a very patient rebuilding
program and in terms of numbers it is starting to pay-off.
The Wildcats have 44 lettermen returning from last year including a league-
leading 23 on defense. And last week, for the first time in three years, North-
western held a halftime lead (9-0) before they went on to lose to Illinois 35-9 in
their season opener.
Venturi was happy with the way his team played last week. "We were ready to
play at game time and we played an aggresive first half. Our inability to
capitalize in the second half certainly made a big impact on the game.
Leading the Northwestern offense into Michigan Stadium is sophomore
tailback Jeff Cohn. The 5-10, 175 pounder from Chicago led the Wildcats in
rushing as a freshman with 426 yards in only eight games.
Also, look for number 26 in white with purple chasing down passes. That
uniform belongs to Todd Sheets, a potential all-conference selection, who finished
second in the Big Ten in receptions last year.
Defensively the Wildcats are led by returning team MVP Chuck Kern, a 6-2, 210
pound inside linebacker who led the Big Ten in tackles last season with 227. Also
back is free safety Bobby Anderson, who, "is a fine football player week in and
week out," said Venturi.

NORTHWESTERN
OFFENSE
Michigan mentor Bo Schembechler displayed his usual precaution before any
Northwestern game. "We haven't played yet and I'm always apprehensive when
you haven't played," said Schembechler.
Although pleased with the offense and the improvement shown in the kicking
game Schembechler appeared a little less pleased with the young and inex-
perienced defensive unit.
Michigan has rebuilt this year's defense around two players, Mike Trgovac and
Andy Cannavino.
The defensive backfield features four new faces this season with two'
sophomores and two juniors. None of the four havesever started a game at'
Michigan.
Jeff Cohen beat out Jeff Reeves, an occasional starter last year, in one of thel
closest contests for a starting position this year. At free safety is the anchor of the
backfield in Ann Arbor's own Keith Bostic, who Bo says has the potential to
become another one of Michigan's greats at that position.
Regardless of how well (or sick) the defense looks tomorrow it really will not
mean much. The first real test is at Notre Dame next week. My prediction: 47
bulbs.

Women harriers take

The rain and the chill could not hold
Melanie Weaver back as she finished
first in the Women's cross country meet
yesterday against Bowling Green. The
Michigan harriers faired well despite
the weather with a 21-37 win in their fir-
st meet of the season. They captured 3
of the first 5 positions in the 3.2 mile
race. Melanie Weaver led the way with
a time of 18:08 min.; Suzie Friedman
finished second with a time of 18:30 and
Lisa Larsen finished fourth with a time
of 18:38.
"We could have gone a lot faster,"
said Melanie, "but I'd rather go slow
and be comfortable than go fast and get
tired." She expects to do better in the
Sept. 20th away meet.
The group of 14 girls have been
preparing for the season by running 8 to
10 miles a day for the past couple of
weeks. "The team is solid this year. We
have no big names, but we have a lot of
good people," added Miss Weaver.
Coach Red Simmons was pleased
with the season's opener. "I'm very
happy with the team's early showing. I
expected Melanie to do well, but was
surprised by the other girls' perfor-
mances. They were a little better than I
expected."
