A urinary tract infection (UTI) can be diagnosed through urinalysis and microscopic examination of urine sediment. When examining the urine under a microscope in cases of a bacterial UTI, numerous pus cells and bacteria indicate the infection.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In bacterial UTI, you can see pus cells, bacteria, epithelial cells, RBCs, and occasionally crystals in urine microscopy. Pus cells, also known as leukocytes or white blood cells, are an important indicator of inflammation and infection in the urinary tract. In a UTI, you would expect to see an elevated number of pus cells in the urine sediment. These cells are the body's immune response to the infection, and they help combat the invading bacteria.
Bacteria can be visualized under the microscope as small, often rod-shaped, or cocci (round) organisms. The presence of bacteria in the urine sediment is a clear sign of a bacterial infection in the urinary tract. The type of bacteria observed may vary depending on the specific causative agent of the UTI. Crystals (Occasional): In some cases, you may also observe crystals in the urine sediment. The presence of crystals is not specific to UTIs and can depend on factors such as urine pH and composition. However, they may occasionally be present in microscopy images. Epithelial cells from the lining of the urinary tract may also be seen in the urine sediment. While the presence of a few epithelial cells is normal, an excessive number of them may suggest irritation or damage to the urinary tract.
In some cases of UTIs, you may also observe red blood cells (hematuria) under the microscope. Hematuria can occur due to inflammation and irritation of the urinary tract caused by the infection.
