Who is Yoshitoshi ABe? :P Yoshitoshi ABe is a very skilled conceptual designer and storyteller. He has been involved in many anime series but he is probably most well known for his works in Serial Experiments Lain and Niea_7. He produces all the art work (which eventually appears in the artbooks) and character designs for the series. How was he involved in Haibane-Renmei then? Haibane-renmei (charcoal feathers federation) was based on a doujinshi (self-published comic) that ABe started a while ago. His idea first was of winged beings, such as the illustration to the right. Eventually, he says in an interview, the triangle ears became Niea_7 and the angel image became haibane-renmei. He then continued to do doujinshis under the title of 'Old Home'. He doujinshi got recognised by a producer who saw the oppotunity to make an anime series. Will he continue working on Haibane-renmei? ABe stats that he keeps much of the story secret because he may feel like making a sequal or a side story in the future, but he also stated that he wants to produce an artbook (which is out now).
