Mechanical Engineer, Data Center R&D - Mountain View

The role: Mechanical Engineer, Data Center R&D

Our Data Center organization is responsible for the design and operation of industry-leading, geographically-diverse, large scale critical facilities. Mechanical Engineers are highly motivated Mechanical Engineers with demonstrated design and analytical expertise in the areas of complex, mission critical facilities. You should be knowledgeable of the design, construction, commissioning, and operational phases of the data center's lifecycle, with specific expertise in more than one of these areas. You are also knowledgeable of IT equipment and the interplay between the gear and the data center.

Mechanical Engineers possess authoritative knowledge of large-scale mechanical infrastructure systems for mission-critical facilities. Knowledge of architectural concerns, large-scale compute farms, networking, and large industrial/commercial cooling distribution systems is a major plus. You should have extensive experience being involved in large scale technical operations, and demonstrable problem-solving leadership with limited oversight. You possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to create work product with highly accurate results.

Responsibilities:

• Research new designs, materials, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities. Carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into mass production.
• Define data center system-level architectures, specifying performance requirements, and creating accurate conceptual design and programming requirements documentation.
• Produce analyses that ensure designs satisfy the requirements, including predicted cooling, structural, and operational concerns.
• Work closely with Platforms hardware designers to optimize the interfaces between the IT equipment and the facility. Define/create the interface infrastructure between the facility and the IT equipment with a view for optimizing utilization and minimizing the total cost of ownership.
• Travel to data center sites for engineering evaluations, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning, as required.

Requirements:

• MS in Mechanical Engineering preferred (PhD is a plus). BS with strong equivalent work experience will be considered.
• At least 10 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering and 5 years with mission critical facilities.
• Experience in multiple or all of the areas of chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, controls, generators, and life safety systems is desirable.
• Must be a go to resource for mechanical in the area of data center engineering. Special projects are a certainty. Input into upcoming system architectures is required. Troubleshooting ability is a major asset. The ability to perform complex business case analyses is required.
• Experience in mechanical system reliability and risk assessment studies is required.
